The Dali Museum in Figueres - Discover the temple of surrealism
Salvador Dali was a painter from Figueres, a little town in the north of Girona, Catalonia. He was a surrealist painter, although he also did photography and sculpture during his career. He’s without a doubt one of the most famous Spanish artists in history.
He was born in Figueres but he spent part of his life in other places such as Madrid, Paris or the United States before he returned back to Catalonia.
He’s style, highly imaginative, his eccentric behaviour which garnered lot of headlines all over the world, his relationship with Gala and his good friendship with filmmaker Buñuel, helped to make a great legacy for Dalí.
Even if his works are all over the world, his hometown Figueres is the house of two ver important locations. The Dalí Theatre and Museum, where one can find the largest collection ever of Dalí paintings, as well as other paintings from other artists that Dalí collected during his life like El Greco o Duchamp. The building itself is very interesting, reflecting in a way the vision of the painter, and as interesting trivia, Dalí himself is buried there.
Also in Figueres one can find the Portlligat Museum-House. Dali used to live there between 1930-1982, and now it has become a museum where one can see the place where he lived and worked.
Last, the Castle of Pubol is another interesting stop. Located in Púbol, this castle was a gift to his wife Gala, where she spent the summer for some years. After her death, the painter moved there, and since 1996 is a little museum open to the public called Gala-Dalí Castle House Museum.
